Bald Head Island is a boat-accessed residential and resort
island community with 14 miles of beaches, rolling dunes, freshwater
lagoons, a nearly 200-acre maritime forest preserve and approximately
2,000 developed acres. Approximately 10,000 acres of salt marsh and
tidal creeks bordering the island to the north have been deeded to the
State of North Carolina to be left undeveloped. Transportation to the
island is by passenger ferry or private yacht, and island
transportation for property owners and guests is by tram, golf cart,
bicycle or foot. Bald Head Lighthouse, known as "Old Baldy," is North Carolina's oldest lighthouse - built in 1817. (Haven Magazine, fifth annual issue).
